IIRC, the \n at the end of each line is needed because php's closing tag gobbles any newline characters that immediately follow it.
As for the extra space within the meta tag. It's probably a "bug" but not one that really matters. It's probably never been fixed because the output is still valid html, so there's not much point wasting resources fixing it. Feel free to report it as a bug if you or someone else hasn't already.
