Jason, instead of "upgrading" it, you should just add a new version. Open the Synaptic package manager (under System, Administration menu) and search for "sun". You should find both Sun's Java 1.5 and 1.6 options. Either is an improvement over 1.4 , since I don't think a lot of things require 1.6 yet. Pick the JRE version unless you want to write Java programs, in which case you will need the JDK. Also be sure to include the "plugin" so that it will work in your browser.
If you want to make sure the new version of java is the one called from the command-line, open a terminal window and use 'sudo update-alternatives --config java' to make sure your new java is the default.
