Hi everyone,

Come out through the arctic blast this Thursday, January 15, for the January meeting of the Fort Wayne LUG at Canterbury High School, 3210 Smith Road. Main presentation at 7:15 PM, with pre-session at 6:40 PM. As usual, full information is available online at http://fortwaynelug.org/moin.cgi

This month's presentation will be show you how easy it is to use Glade and Python to create GUI applications, in this case your own Woot! monitor. If you've written a few shell scripts or simple programs you should be able to follow everything covered. And you'll be surprised at how little you need to do to get a GUI app up and working.

If you want to write the code on your own laptop (encouraged) be sure to install the following packages (on Ubuntu, names may differ slightly on other distros) - glade-3 tepache libglade2-0 python-gtk2.

You will also need Python 2.4 or later, which should be on most current distros, and a text editor - gedit on Ubuntu is fine, or you can install idle on Ubuntu to get the default Python editor.

Again, we'll be offering a pre-sesssion at 6:40, which will review the basics of Python and prepare you for the main talk which will start at 7:20. Just as a reminder, these pre-sessions are an experiment - we'll be looking at attendance to see if people really want them.

Having learned from comments arising from our shell scripting meeting a few months ago, we've been careful to keep this at a beginner programming level. Beginners to programming will find this challenging, but should still be able to produce a working app.

Also, Rob will be sending out his slides and notes to this list before the meeting, so watch for those.

Cheers,
Vern
