Hi everyone, This is a final reminder and an incentive for this month's LUG meeting. First, the incentive...
Door Prizes! Yes, as if a night of Python and Woot! wasn't enough, thanks to Pearson Publishing I have a bucketful of books for door prizes, with a total retail value of $220. For some lucky attendee of the pre-session on basic Python, there is "Python Fundamentals", a 7+ hour DVD of video instruction on Python by Wes Chun, author of Core Python Programming. For the main event we have "A Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux", by Sobell, "PHP and MySQL Web Development" by Welling and Thomson, and "Assembling the Social Web with Zembly", by Anderson and Anderson. So come on out and stake your claim. Now for the meeting reminder... This winter may have stopped us once, but we are determined to fight back. Come out this Thursday, February 19, for the Jan^H^H^HFebruary meeting of the Fort Wayne LUG at Canterbury High School, 3210 Smith Road. Main presentation at 7:15 PM, with pre-session at 6:40 PM. As usual, full information is available online at http://fortwaynelug.org/moin.cgi This month's presentation will show you how easy it is to use Glade and Python to create GUI applications, in this case, your own Woot! monitor. If you've written a few shell scripts or simple programs you should be able to follow everything covered. And you'll be surprised at how little you need to do to get a GUI app up and working. If you want to write the code on your own laptop (encouraged) be sure to install the following packages (on Ubuntu, names may differ slightly on other distros) - glade-3 tepache libglade2-0 python-gtk2 idle . You will also need Python 2.4 or later, which should be on most current distros, and a text editor - gedit on Ubuntu is fine, or you can install idle on Ubuntu to get the default Python editor. *Again, we'll be offering a pre-sesssion at 6:40pm*, which will review the basics of Python and prepare you for the main talk which will start at 7:15. Just as a reminder, these pre-sessions are an experiment - we'll be looking at attendance to see if people really want them. Having learned from comments arising from our shell scripting meeting a few months ago, we've been careful to keep this at a beginner programming level. Beginners to programming will find this challenging, but should still be able to produce a working app. Also, Rob's slides and notes are on the wiki at http://fortwaynelug.org/moin.cgi/Meeting_2057 so you can look at them before you get here, if you want. Cheers, Vern -- This time for sure! -Bullwinkle J.
