I've been having a lot of trouble getting my system to dual boot Fedora 11
and OpenSolaris, and I wonder if anyone might know what I'm doing wrong.
Here is the existing OpenSolaris file:
splashimage /boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
background 215ECA
timeout 30
default 0
#---------- ADDED BY BOOTADM - DO NOT EDIT ----------
title OpenSolaris 2009.06
findroot (pool_rpool,0,a)
bootfs rpool/ROOT/opensolaris
splashimage /boot/solaris.xpm
foreground d25f00
background 115d93
kernel$ /platform/i86pc/kernel/$ISADIR/unix -B $ZFS-BOOTFS,console=graphics
module$ /platform/i86pc/$ISADIR/boot_archive
#---------------------END BOOTADM--------------------
# Unknown partition of type 131 found on /dev/rdsk/c8d0p0 partition: 2
# It maps to the GRUB device: (hd0,1) .
# Unknown partition of type 142 found on /dev/rdsk/c8d0p0 partition: 3
# It maps to the GRUB device: (hd0,2) .
I added the text from the Fedora menu.lst file (which appears below) between
the lines "#------------END BOOTADM------------#" and "# Unknown partition
etc." That allowed me to boot into Fedora, but the OpenSolaris boot
failed. I next tried adding the Fedora text, while deleting the "Unknown
partition...." stuff, but this led to what I will call a "Blue Screen of No
Return" (at least a "Blue Screen of Death" generates an error message---this
didn't even have the courtesy to do that!).
The Fedora menu.lst:
#boot=/dev/sda
default=0
timeout=1
splashimage=(hd0,1)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu

title Fedora (2.6.30.8-64.fc11.i586)
root (hd0,1)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.30.8-64.fc11.i586 ro
root=/dev/mapper/vg_joseph-lv_$
initrd /initrd-2.6.30.8-64.fc11.i586.img
title Fedora (2.6.29.4-167.fc11.i586)
root (hd0,1)
I believe in keeping things as simple as possible. I usually boot to the
2.6.30.8-64.fc11.i586 environment, so I could probably dispense with the
2.2.69 part, right? (Except I'm afraid to try deleting anything now!)
Obviously I have to keep the "Unknown partiton" stuff or I get a blue
screen. I believe those refer to my Linux partition and my Linux swap
partition, but I didn't know why they were in there and I thought (wrongly)
that I might be able to get rid of them. What I don't see is why the
OpenSolaris selection won't boot properly after adding the Fedora
information. I have read conflicting reports online that recommend a
chainload and how to do it----usually on an older version of Solaris. The
official Sun support page isn't giving me any information beyond what I
already have. So, I'm coming here. Does anyone have any suggestions?
