Folks, Thanks for the comments ...
What I was attempting to do was use Knoppix to see if I could rescue information from an XP-PRO drive. As far as I can tell Knoppix seems to start up OK, but dies with the message belowwhen it is looking for a hard drive to analyze "Kernel panic.. not synching: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,3)" While I am wondering if any rescue software would work if Knoppix can't find the drive in question I certainly am not savy about any of the "black magic" that might be out there somewhere that might help resolve the problem. While I fear a dead disk, XP-PRO does try to run a CHKDSK on the drive, so maybe all is not lost. I'm still open for comments and suggestions. Thanks again..
