I don't know others' experience, but I've had almost no trouble with video
cards, lately; I've got at least one each: ATI, nVidia, and Intel.

When shopping, I tend to look for cards where somewhere in the reviews
someone says "this works great for me on Linux." (Newegg reviewers are
pretty good about complaining about stuff doesn't work in Linux.)

Just a couple thoughts.
