Hi everyone,

We had an pretty interesting meeting tonight - what follows is an
attempt to hit the high points:

We had some good lightning talks - Christer on using Open Office, Wine
and MS Office reader to handle electronically commenting on student
papers, Simón on the pitfalls of Google Docs for student papers, Vern
on connecting to the same screen session from different machines
simultaneously, and Rob on (wait for it... ) Why Java Sucks. ;)

The rest of evening was spent in discussing the future of the LUG. The
main issues are:

1. Vern will be leaving Canterbury (and probably Fort Wayne) by summer
to look for a job involving more Python and/or more Linux.
2. Rob's work schedule means that he will often be, as he puts it,
"unreliable" about organizing meetings and sending social meeting
notices.
3. Rob and Vern have been organizing meetings and presentations for
years and are:
     a. out of new ideas
     b. increasingly interested in programming topics that aren't so
interesting to the group at large
     c. more than ready to pass the torch
     d. all of the above

So the group needs others to step forward and take over. If
presentations are going to continue, a small group is going to need to
take that over. Now is the time to get started, since we have a few
months to transition and February's speaker is already arranged (Brian
Proffitt of Linux.com fame). As Rob pointed out, if 3 or 4 people take
it on, then each person only needs to find 2 or 3 meetings a year. So
please consider it.

People will also need to volunteer presentations. Christer pointed out
that a 30 minute presentation with discussion is plenty for a meeting,
and everyone in group has enough knowledge to present on something.

While much still needs to be figured out, some things were decided:
* we can continue meet at Canterbury - Simón will take care of the
requests for the space next year
* Christer will take over sending out social meeting announcements and
will maintain the Google calendar for the LUG which is viewable at:
http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=ml7s47893pbele4qicok255tb0%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America/New_York
* Joe Brennan will be taking over managing the wiki at some point in
the near future

I think that's everything, but others can jump in with responses,
corrections, and suggestions.

Cheers,
Vern
