On its own, [000000] designates the root directory. I don't know what it
means in this context, except I see a trailing dot in the first
directory spec. My memories of all this are rather dim.

All through this, I can't help feeling it'd be easier to write the cpp
as a Perl source filter - no extra processes and no buffer limit.
