If can be useful here ( http://www.brainetwork.net/tesi.pdf ) is my degree
dissertation I've presented in march.

The topic of the dissertation in a bit wider and touch many different topics
( "Project of secure web services with Web Services tecnology in a didactic
application" )... but chapter 4.3 briefly describes how to secure the web
service with Axis HTTPS or WSS4J, and chapter 4.3.3 contains some performance
comparison of a "real world" service.

(sorry it's in italian, but if someone is interested, I can translate some
sections... anyway you could look at the performance graphs :) )
