A VGA display will work on a DVI machine of the M8407 origins but
obviously not show DVI resolutions, vise versa a M8407 Powerbook will
work with a DVI display but might have not enough video ram to run the
display correctly.
However in a VGA screen the location of the magnet to activate the
reed switch is the crucial question, which could mean your powerbook
will overheat if the wrong display is installed. The Magnet inside the
display tells the reed switch when the LCD is closed and the powerbook
should go to sleep. The location of the magnet and switch differ
between the models M5884 and M8407. The easiest way to find out which
is which is to take one little left over screw from your powerbook.
Place the display LCD down on a desk and check in which location your
little screw sticks to the display.
