Mike, I assume you are talking about the backlighting and that you have under System Preferences/Keyboard&Mouse/Keyboard checked the box for backlighting.
I found that by using a screen protection cloth laid on top of the keyboard, then whenever I opened the notebook, the backlighting came on; otherwise I was forever going back into preferences and toggling it off and then on to get the backlighting. I don't know if this will solve your problem. Let me know.
