When I have had this problem periodically, I have had to consult with
my ISP or at least had to troubleshoot using their their help
documents. I can't remember ever having solved it on my own. On at
least one occasion I had to change the Mail port number at their
direction. If all else fail give them a try. Good luck.

PS: I don't use SSL either, but I do use authentication.
