I've got two iBooks that are very different. One is a 466 MHz
clamshell, the other an 800 MHz 12" iceBook. Both seem to have an
identical issue. These iBooks have very different video cards. The 466
MHz has an 8 MB Rage Pro. The 800 MHz has a 32 MB Radeon 7500.

The problem is that if either is booted normally they often come up
black screen, the LCD has nothing, but the boot completes normally,
and if you press the Power key followed by the Return key they will
shutdown normally. Resetting the PMU or resetting the PRAM/NVRAM has
no effect. Most "normal" boots result in a black screen.

Strangely, most verbose boots, either by using the Cmd-v keys at
startup or setting the verbose flag either in Terminal or Open
Firmware results in a normal boot with the LCD functioning "semi-
normally". I use the term "semi-normally" because there are some lines
and artifacts that will sometimes streak the screen a little, but
quickly go away. I'm thinking the video cards may have bad VRAM, or
"slow" VRAM, but I don't know, it's just a guess.

Both have 10.4.11, but these symptoms seem to be independent of the
OS. The clamshell has OS 9.2.2 on a separate partition and it
sometimes boots black and sometimes boots normally. The normal boot
never turns black while in use, so it's not likely a cable issue. I
think some small electronic part may be burned out - there is a very
faint smell of burnt electronics on both these iBooks.

Any ideas on why two very different iBooks would seemingly have
identical issues? Solution?
