You can try to set up locations in your Network preferences, which  
would have the characteristics that you want to use.  For example,  
you could have a location set up with Appletalk active on your  
wireless connection, and not on ethernet, and another where the  
Appletalk preferences are reversed.  At least in Tiger, I use this  
type of approach to switch between network preferences (e.g. - static  
vs. dynamic IP addresses, and whether the modem is accessed in  
preference to ethernet).  Again, in Tiger, there is a 'Location'  
submenu under the Apple menu that lets me select which network  
location setup I wish to use.

It's not the ideal that you would want, and would probably give a few  
frustrating moments when using the wrong location when attempting  
printing, but it is better than having to open the Network preference  
pane all the time.
