That's normal.

Apple's Airport software in OS 9 only recognizes the original Airport 
card and certain other cards (Orinoco Gold and Silver, Lucent, a model 
from Dell and others).  They all use the same 802.11b chip set.

Apple's Airport software in OS X only recognizes the newer Airport card 
and others that use the Broadcom chipset.
