I tend to agree with Carl. Sam, your HD is on its way out, something that is
only evident once the HD is commanded to perform actively (i.e. IT is the
boot volume, not the CD), not passively. Eventually, its ability to be
successfully queried for I.D. will be lost. Try a known-good HD as a first
move towards success :-) Alas, changing out an HD in that iBook is not very
easy.
