Not sure what you mean by this. My internal cd was broken and I tried
to install via a firewire cd burner, my computer would not boot from
it but yours might. I tried also booting macOS with the drive and
well, taking out the drive from the box and putting in an old apple
logo's cd-rom, I could boot os9 or something but not osX, and the
linux cd still would not boot. My external box is a Lacie which is
only partially supported by MacOSX

However, I have successfully installed Linux by copying from another
mac, with the recipient in firewire target mode (holding down the T
key at startup. You have to make sure and copy the small boot
partition, and you have to run ybin to install the boot block unless
the partition map is identical (same numbers on the partitions. And
you have to boot the origin machine from cd to efficiently copy from
it. However you can avoid that if you use gparted rather than parted
to do the copy.

It is similar to a clone install of MacOS using DiskUtility restore or
AppleSoftwareRestore from Terminal, however it is much much faster if
you use parted (a few minutes per gigabyte).

Supposedly you can also install from an iso image on the MacOS
partition but when I tried that I could not get it to work.

For the rescue CD I use Gentoo installer, even though I run debian,
because the Gentoo is a real live cd but console only which is what I
need.
