I have a G4 iBook with OSX 10.4.11. The broadband modem is Sierra
Wireless tiger T598. Sprint store ordered me a new one just in case
there was something wrong with the original one I bought. The
employees and tech support do not know how to activate it on a Mac. I
have spent hours on the phone with tech support and several hours in
different Sprint stores.
All they know how to do is download and install the software, over
and over again. I went over to the Apple store. The not-so-genius guy
at the Genius Bar didn't really know Mac. He was a new employee who
only knew PC and had no training on Mac. He said that there was
nothing wrong with my USB ports. He downloaded the Sierra software and
it always says that it 'detects no device'. He was clueless.
My friend has the same Sierra wireless modem with ATT instead of
Sprint. The ATT tech people knew codes to tell her husband over the
phone to get their wireless modem to work with their new Mac
Powerbook.
The device does not show up in Network on my iBook. Same thing
happens whether my firewall is on or off.
A Sprint employee told me that he made it work on a PC in the back of
the store, but I can not confirm that since I didn't see him do it. He
said that he had a Mac friend who installed a Sierra Modem once and
there were number codes you had to know.
Hopefully, I can connect with someone out there, somewhere, that
knows how to activate this wireless modem on my iBook.
I've read my OS Tiger books, but they have only general info about
broadband modems. I've read all the pages on the manufacturer website.
I got an email back from Sierra tech support with some directions. But
the message always says "No device detected". I didn't see a phone
number on their webpage to call tech support directly.
