When you look for this option, do you have something plugged into
the jack? If so, try plugging something different in and see if it
still doesn't show up. This will tell you if the plug is at fault.
Try wiggling the plug a bit.
If the computer itself is the problem (rather than what you're
plugging in), I seem to remember that the socket can wear out. I
seem to remember that it can also be replaced fairly easily. My
memory could be faulty on these two points, however.
