I have heard that the Pismo has to get really, really hot for the fan to
turn on at all.  Mine has never come on in my normal usage, with OS X
10.4.11, 768MB RAM and 40GB HDD.

It would be nice to have a software method to test the fan (or control
it), but there doesn't seem to be anything out there for this model.
