It's along time since I've burrowed inside my Pismo - it just sits on
a shelf, doing Tiger-powered webserving - but I think the grey stuff
you mention might be thermal paste. That is gunk that's painted onto
the top of the CPU to bond it to the bits that take the heat away.

By dis-assembling the machine, you and I (and whoever else owned our
Pismos previously) has undone this bond so that transferring heat away
from the CPU is less efficient than originally.

I used to hear the fan come on and stay on for quite a while, but when
it happened didn't seem to correlate with processor-intensive tasks.
Since I've just used it as webserver, Pismo's been quiet. It's never
been too hot to have on my lap, while my MacBookpro has often
threatened to scorch my unmentionables.

I think you can buy new thermal paste but I've no idea how hard it is
to apply it or whether you need to remove the old stuff first.

This might be worth a read:

Here's a tale of someone upgrading the heat-removal system to put in a
G3/900 processor upgrade:

Anyone else?
