You need the retail install set.  IIRC it has a black background.  Any 
other installer would list specific machine(s) it is for.

You have a Pismo so you should have a DVD drive.  If for what ever 
reason you have a CD drive instead you'll need the CD install set for 
Tiger.  The standard install disk is DVD-ROM.


While it's a good idea to have the installer disk(s) you may not need to 
re-install the OS.  It's rather rare that you need to do that with OS X.

Try creating a new user and test the machine to see if you have the same 
problems with that user.
