It may sound strange but its true, and also the trackpad. You can see
it when you boot linux (maybe verbose mode OSX too ???).  Its also
that way in (at least the early) TiBooks.
I can hook up my old adb tablet with an Imate and it draws but no
pressure sensitive degrees
(that is, like a giant trackpad).

Wow. I've got an SD reader pc-card,  I don't boot off it, but it goes
around pretty well.

I still think an  off-the-shelf solution would be the way to go...
Somebuddy could do a mail-order home business out of rebuilding
them ... formulating the pieces to hold it in the case and connect
with things.

Or possibly with the advances in SOC technology (system on a chip), a
logic board could be assembled on the spot, using one of those.

Still worried about the keyboard, but maybe the pismo could get a
keyboard that worked as well as the wallstreet, even re-use the pismo
keys ...

Gosh you might even be able to land some of those Green business
startup funds.
