Loose hinges mean that there is play in the screen. They can mean that
the hinges themselves are coming loose, or perhaps even that the hinge
has broken (this happened in a Lombard I have).

Yes, you can fix loose hinges. The repair isn't easy—you've got to
take apart most of your computer to fix them. You can get new hinges
for fairly cheap, though. You may want to take apart your computer
first to see which hinge you need to have replaced. iFixit has a great
guide about how to do this whole thing, and they even sell the hinges.

Here's a link to the disassembly guide for the whole screen (you'll
only need to go so far as replacing the hinges) so you can get an idea
of whether you think you're up to this:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-PowerBook-G3-Pismo-Display/30/1

And if you feel like iFixit's prices are a little steep, you might be
able to get the hinges (or even an entire display assembly) from the
LEM Swap List.

Living with it is definitely a viable option. The only disadvantage to
this, however, is that one hinge may be looser than the other, and
this can eventually cause problems. In my Lombard, the hinge on the
left was much looser than the hinge on the right, so eventually, the
hinge on the right just snapped and I actually had to replace the
entire display housing as well (because the hinge broke out of it).
You probably won't have this problem, but it is something to keep in
mind.

I hope that information helps. Feel free to contact me if you've got
any questions—I've done hinge repair on both my Lombard and my Pismo.
It's worth it.
