Well, lucky me! I took the right battery out and found that the metal
strut running along the front of the laptop was just popped out of
place near the right end. Take a screwdriver, apply a little pressure,
and presto! Battery slides in and works perfectly, and, better yet,
the DVD-ROM is fully functional again! Everything else seems to be
fine, except for some barely noticeable cracks here and there. I think
it actually corrected an earlier event which made the flap on the
right bay tend to stick.
Thanks for the advice, though. I was actually thinking about making a
hackintosh, but I think I'll wait for the iSlate now. That's the Mac
I'd replace my Pismo with.
