Hi All
I have two Wallstreet 233s one I upgraded to 300MHz. I'm interested in
using a laser printer via Ethernet port. What laser printers will
work out of
the box without a lot of tricky moves? I have a Lexmark E120 for my
iMac G3
10.4.11 and 9.2.2. I want to use OS 8.6 and maybe 9.2.2 on the
Wally's.
Any network connected Laser printer that supports Postscript and lpd
or Appletalk, will work without hassles.
Any HP Laserjet XXXXn model will do, the 'n' on the end denotes a
built-in jet direct interface. The only Lexmark network connected
printers I've dealt with behaved similarly, but HP's JetDirect has
long been the gold standard of network connections for me. Brother's
are a close second.
The big deal is they have to support PostScript; that way you can use
the Desktop Printer stuff in OS 8.1 and up to connect to network
printers, using the Laserwriter utility to set up the connection and
specify the PPD.
Any printer that does not support PS (or LPD or Appletalk) has to
explicitly provide network drivers for the Mac, with PS printers all
you need is the PS PPD file. (I've never run into a PostScript network
printer that wasn't running either LPD or Appletalk)
