I don't know if this fixes your problem but it's something I recall being related...

Open /Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup. You can setup your audio in and out there.

Well, I appreciate the info. However, I got disgusted with the
thing and shut it down to do some other chores. Started it up
a few hours later and all was "back to normal." Go figure!
