For 15 years I had a thought-it-was-indestructable HP Laserjet II. I also have
a very wide-format (13 inch wide by however long you want) Epson 1520 ink jet
printer....both were connected to all my Macs and Linux machines through a 3
port external HP Jetdirect box and I never
had any problems with printing from OS X with either.

The HP series II finally failed (something in the system that clears
tonor off the drum after printing went bad so I always had a "ghost"
of the previous page on my printouts - and HP stopped making the toner for it
completely) - so I went to a used office equipment store and got an HP4050
laser printer - this also works perfectly with both Linux and OS X and has an
onboard ethernet option. We use HP4050's and HP4100's at work in an all-Mac
shop so I wouldn't hesitate to get one of those.

99% of what I print (at work and home) is black and white so no reason
for me to spend HUGE bux on a color laser (and if you think inkjet ink is
expensive - wait until you have to replace 4 toners/4 imaging units/transfer
belt/waste cartridge/fuser on a color laser printer (we have ONE at work and it
is a money pit). If you do lots of color work, the color laser MAY be worth it
but they are not cheap to run.
