Could this be my wireless router (D-Link)?
D-Link routers aren't the best, and original 802.11b Airport cards
aren't great either.
Check for firmware updates for your router:
<http://www.dlink.com/support/products/>
If the router is 802.11b, consider a new 802.11g or 802.11n router and
Broadcom chipset 802.11g or 802.11n PCMCIA card for the Pismo. Apple
routers aren't that great either. I'd consider a router that uses
OpenWRT firmware, see <http://openwrt.org/>.
Any Broadcom chipset device including PCMCIA should be able to be
recognized as normal Apple "Airport" if you use
"bcm43xx_enabler_0.5.3.sh" script available here:

Don't use a USB wireless dongle in a Pismo, USB 1 is too slow for
anything faster than 802.11b.
or should I use a different browser?
You can try other browsers for speed differences, but I don't think
the browser is the issue here.
