Hi-
you guys helped me out before with an audio hum (it wasn't a ground loop)
coming out of my Pismo, into the stereo. (I solved it by transferring all my
music to my old white iBook--
no hum anymore.
Now, I've got this Pismo, which (aside from a bad (?) sound card, just crashes
every browser, except perhaps Firefox, but that is really slow.
I'm running 10.39, because my HD crashed and I bought a new one last year (80
gig);
however traveling in Mexico I did not have the Tiger disk. So I had to settle
for someone's
Panther disk. RAM is about 783. I have no desire to raise higher, since all I
do is use this
for internet surfing. (no games, no graphics, maybe occasional itunes)
Safari (1.3.2) quits every day, but it's fast enough. Camino seems slower, but
eventually
quits. Or beachballs if I am typing an email. Opera tries to go real fast, and
quits every 4 minutes (it's like letting a 6 year old drive your car.. it'll go
fast, and crash every block).
And Firefox (version 2.0.0.0.something) is slow enough to go to the kitchen and
mix a drink
while my Yahoo mail opens (and forget some sites like Americablog.com).
Is the only answer really to upgrade (that is, pay Steve Jobs $250 for a 10.4.1
upgrade disk?) (How old is 10.4.1 now?)
IS there a bare-bones browser which will not quit while trying to be fast, but
also not
be so slow that I can go out for groceries while the page loads?
Users/Library/Prefs is empty, as is Users/Library/plug-ins. Nada.
Javascript is updated (at least I try) constantly.
I can do banking on Firefox (it won't quit) but I don't risk it on other
browsers; they quit.
The 80 gig HD is about 70 percent free. Is there such a big difference between
10.39
and 10.4.1?
(my white cracked-motherboard iBook is 10.4.1 and Opera goes real fast on that
too,
and crashes badly every hour or so.. Safari on 10.4.1 seems the most stable).
Oh well... until I leave Mexico, all I can do is cannibalize the laptops:
Pismo, parts-Pismo, iBook (cracked), another iBook (cracked), iBook (not
cracked, yet!)
My kingdom for a 10.4.1 upgrade disk... the ebay sales used to be shut down
immediately,
when I was looking for one last year.. all I can do now is Target Disk (which
fails constantly)
