I've got the Pismo with the ten partitions (which I have decided isn't a
problem),and wanted, while I was at it, to "wonder aloud" about an airport
extreme base station which I left with a friend, two blocks over. I left it in
favor of an old 'garage sale' D-link, so I could clone the Mac Address (the
Apple Extreme unit prevents us from doing so).
Today, that Apple Extreme (at his house) malfunctioned, but we got it up and
running again, through various resets and wiring checks (it's 2 years old).
But the blinky lights have stopped completely...(causing me to think it was
dead or it has had one of those Mexican power surges).
I was told that it actually functioned for 2 days without the blinky lights.
(this was after the whole set-up was moved, for better reception in the house).
Me, I would not have moved it, if it works. On the main desktop G4 (with
10.39), the Setup Assistant has a nice bow tie, but none of the settings stick.
It always thinks it's on 'telephone modem' no matter what you do. But, that's
a different issue...
Anyway, I got the Airport Extreme back up and running tonight, first with the
wireless (but not through the ethernet outlet leading to the desktop computer),
and then finally the desktop (i was so burned out, I do not know how I got it
upand running-- plus, they were working on the cable outside all day....
but the one oddity remains.. no more blinky lights on the Airport unit.. but
it does work, and it puts out a wireless signal to the guests in the small
rental house where I left it...
I assumed it was dead.
Meanwhile my old $20 D link continues to work, even when someone throws dirty
laundryover it (adding to the heat build-up). it's 4 years old.
I wonder (actually I am sure) that the Airport's blinky lights are signaling an
eventual failure. Shame.. it's only 2 years old. I don't expect to find this
problem on any Internet forums.
So if your Airport Extreme loses it's start-up lights, and you check it out and
re-start it several times... don't always assume it's dead...ours is back up...
for how long, I don't know.
In this small town in Mexico they have a habit of putting the cable/internet
wires right under the high-tension wires, and whenever there is a windstorm, or
a car crash... well, you knowwhat happens to everyone's tv and internet...
thanks to all
steve
