I know this is slightly OT, but I have a friend with a Windows drive that is so infected with trojans and malware that the best option is to pull the drive, hook it to a clean machine and sort it out from there.

I wondered if I can do this from a Mac or do I need to hook it up to another Windows machine.

Should be no problem. If you aren't using an antivirus program right now, and only want to use one for this specific task, I would recommend ClamXav (free). You can define a quarantine folder, and have infected files automatically moved into that folder for later disposition.

Some basic prep first: Wipe out all of Windows except the user's data (this eliminates infected apps and rootkits). Make a backup. Then hit the user data with the likes of ClamAV.

Build your new cooties, er a Windows, system. Install a good AV *and* Spybot S&D. Then add that user data - and scan it again. Then, once it's clean, let it near the 'net.

YMMV. Be sure to decontaminate yourself after doing all this. And when you return the system to your friend remember to include a new brick and bandana.
