If the spots require keys, they're generally using WPA keys instead of WEP 
keys. The original Airport will work with both kinds of keys, but it depends on 
what OS you're running. If you're running anything 10.2 and below (OS 9, for 
example), then you won't be able to connect to anything that requires a WPA 
key. You should be able to connect to any open hotspot that doesn't require a 
key.

There are some wifi spots that will set up their wireless routers/points to 
only allow x.11g and n, but I find that these are pretty rare.

They stick out a bit from the PCMCIA slot, but if you get the right card, OS X 
10.3 and above will recognize it as an Airport Extreme card. 10.2 will 
recognize it as an original Airport card. Look for anything that runs on the 
Broadcom chipset.
