If the date is 1969 then you have a battery problem.

if the date is only off by some hours then you may have installed the
time zone correction incorrectly

occasionally there is a bug with respect to setting the time at boot
that throws it back to some arbitrary date, possibly 1969. If that is
the case are you running a stable- released  version of Debian ?

does your battery work at all, have you installed the appropriate Mac
power management and battery monitor for your ibook (there are two
kinds you have to look up which is right for your book).
