I'm thinking of buying a used Macbook Pro, sometimes around December/January.
Which would the best to buy? I want one that is capable of running the latest
MacOs and probably the next. Price is a factor, otherwise I'd just buy a new
one. Something under $1000.00 would be great.

I am unsure of netiquette--but it seems others are bottom posting so....
First I am talking about a Macbook NOT a Macbook Pro--just bought this one
from eBay $395 in my hands. Just FYI, this included a dongle, a mouse, an
Incase neoprene sleeve, a copy of '08 iLife, and the packaged disc of Snow
Leopard.
I lucked out but also had been looking and watching for over 6 months. I
got a MB063LL/B late 2007 (Sant Rosa)-- that I now have running the last Snow
Leopard (I downloaded Lion and got saved at the last minute- had I downloaded
it woud have rendered all my files and records for over 20 years (including IRS
records!) inaccessible since the software use required Rosetta and that is no
more). But back to your question. I looked for something that would be
compatible with the iMac I was forced into when my G-4 died completely
(suddenly) and affordable. I also loved my Wallstreet and wanted the black
macbook-- so I looked at the older models that had the power and the right
chip. Then it was just a matter of waiting and hoping.
So, I am right now using the macbook to type this-- I actually transferred
the whole hard drive (via Time Machine) onto this hard drive--so I have two
complete systems. I used
http://www.everymac.com
to pull up the specs on all Macbooks and went from there in researching
one that had the capability but was old enough to be affordable for me. I know
you were asking about a Macbook PRO, but thought I would toss out wat I did and
found.
