No I do know that the USB keyboard and mouse have always presented as a separate hub. I'll have to look in System Profiler on my PBG4 at home tonight to see what it is.

> so you'd kind of expect a global USB failure to be present. So, if it is internally USB, the only other think I can think of, past what has already been suggested, is that the actual keyboard/trackpad device might be having an issue as a USB HID? Is it a self contained unit, or is some of the device broken out on to the main logic board?

The keyboard and trackpad are separate units, but are interconnected on the wiring.

Stray thought just hit me....Web cameras and the like use CCD's that are quite sensitive in the IR (point a TV remote at your web cam and press the buttons see what you see), and actually have IR filters so they don't burn out in bright light. These filters are reasonably easy to remove <http://www.instructables.com/id/Making-a-Night-Vision- Webcam/>

I wonder if such a modified web cam might not be a useful tool for identifying possible electronics failures, as the typical failure mode for intermittent issues like this is a short circuit or poor connection that breaks when something runs too hot; aiming a modified camera at the logic board might identify the 'hot spots', helping isolate the problems...

I believe piano was the last PowerBook to use adb

Which was the last model that used ADB for the internal keyboard and
trackpad?

That particular model, like Kris says, has a tiny cable connecting
both trackpad and keyboard to the logic board. There is a possibility
that this connection is either loose or breaking.

I would not recommend anybody to try re-seating it, as it is very
fragile and can easily break. I know it for a fact, since it happened
to me while upgrading the HD and optical drives. That's one of the
instances that calls for professional help --unless of course one
knows soldering and REALLY handy stuff.

The Pismo.

No, you are talking about external ports. Apple used ADB internally till quite late in the PowerBook line. As others have stated, some G4 Models even used ADB internally. The Pismo was the last to have an external ADB port.

The Pismo does NOT have external ADB. It does have S-Video which uses the same MiniDIN-4 connector. The wallstreet DOES have an external ADB port. So either the Wallstreet or Lombard is the last model with external ADB.

Fair enough. I don't own a Pismo, so I don't know any better - simply making assumption on the info posted here so far. I do know that ADB (or a flavour of it) continued to exist and be used (for various tasks) in PowerBooks, right up till the MacBook. Models right up to the later G4 PowerBooks used the ADB protocol for connecting their internal Keyboard and trackpad, plus they all (afaik) continued to use it for the PMU and some other device I forget. How it was implemented, no idea. Might be as it was in legacy Macs, might be over USB, might be some internal specific bus protocol layer. But, no matter the technicalities, required ADB drivers to make those peripherals function. Make of that what you will :-)
