Humm, were you using the PPC port of daily build Ubuntu 12.04 (the final release for PPC is 11.10)? If not, try again with download from here: <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCDownloads#A11.04_Natty_Narwhal_and_11.10_Oneiric_Ocelot >
i went to restore and realised the data was backed up to a folder, I booted from my install disk and tried to convert the folder unsuccessfully to a disk image it says complete then i try to restore the HDD from it and i get the error that it is not recognisable.
Sounds like you may have all sorts of problems here. Was the Firewire HD formated as Apple partition map with HFS+ file system? If you didn't reformat the Firewire drive, it's likely a standard Master Boot Record partition map with FAT file system that's used on PCs.
You're not clear about whether you were trying to backup your entire "System" or only your "data". Your data is likely fine in folder form, but your "System" is lost I'm afraid.
You'll likely need to reinstall OS X from CD/DVD and then manually move any "data" from the folders you've saved.
In the future, you'll want to make sure the HD is formatted correctly prior to cloning, and after cloning you should attempt to boot the cloned HD and make certain it's complete.
