You mean setting it as the Startup disk? This is odd, it should find it anyway if it's not set. You should get a flashing question mark briefly, then a startup icon when it finds it. If not specified, a mac will look at each mounted volume that's attached to find a blessed system folder. Technically speaking you should only need to use Startup Disk if there are more than one volume with a system folder attached to the computer.
