Personally, I put a 3 volt camera battery in one of my pre-G3 desktops and it works fine. It was slightly fatter, but the correct length.
Best advice - don't leave the dead battery in the device. I recently discovered a 6100 in my collection had been totally murdered by an exploding/leaking battery.
