A friend just bought a new-to-him iBook G4.
I sent him the note below to start him out. Most everything has come
out of this list G-Group and iMac Group and these other LEM Lists:
G-Books, G4 'Books, Tiger Group, and Mac OS X 10.4 Group.
The info is also applicable to other G4s as well as G3 and G5 machines.
Also useful for OSX10.5.x besides 10.4.11
- Thanks Dan and List Contributers!

iBook G4 1.33GHz 40GB 12" 1.5GB OSX10.4.11(Tiger)
I've owned three of these workhorses, the first bought new in
November 2004 when it was announced that Apple would introduce a non-
PowerPC machine and end iBook production. It's still running nicely.
The other two I bought on Amazon; they're still chugging along as well.
Over the years I've found a few tips and tricks to force these
venerables to keep up with changes:
- Best browser to use for pre-Intel machines is TenFourFox 7450
(SourceForge) based on FireFox. (Safari is too buggy in PPCs.)
- Install Add-Ons: QuickTime Enabler and AdBlock Plus (available on
TenFourFox)
- Install Flip4Mac (Microsoft) to run Windows video.
- Run Monolingual (SourceForge) to gain a lot of HD space.
- Run Onyx (Titanium) every couple of months or so.
- Remember to always download and install the Tiger 10.4.11 SW
versions.
- Max out the RAM to 1.5GB.
- I also installed larger HDs in two of the iBooks: 80GB and 100GB.
They run beautifully with an SSD!
- To prolong battery life, once a month or so, unplug the power and
let the machine run down to zero battery until the screen goes dark.
- As much as possible, never turn off the iBook.
