Replacing the backup battery is about as hard as installing additional RAM; the backup battery is under the keyboard, right next to the hard drive. There's no real "procedure" to it; you unplug it and pull it out. It's the black and amber "pack" right between the hard drive and the right-hand palm rest, it's connector is next to the right side screw for the shield that goes over the processor card. I've yet to encounter a battery that RadShack didn't have in stock, or at least could get for me within a reasonable amount of time. I've never asked about powerbook lithium batteries though.....
