Paul - do a check with Apple System Profiler and see which model of 
DVD/CDROM drive you have. If your vendor ID is LG, that version has a 
history of over time gradually going bad. Mine started out gradually, but 
then it got more and more frequent until iTunes would freeze up if I put 
an audio CD into the drive (didn't trust trying it with my few DVDs). If 
you are at all within warranty (original? or AppleCare extended), get the 
drive to your nearest Apple service provider ASAP! If you're lucky, Apple 
will replace it with the other (forgot the name) brand. If you're a 
little less lucky (like my experience), if you're under some kind of 
warranty you will at least get a working LG DVD/CDROM drive and the 
problems will go away (for maybe another couple of years or so).

But don't put it off, as my experience was that the problem didn't go 
away; it just began to get a little bit worse with time.
