I am on my third digital camera. It is a Fuji 4700 and I absolutely love it. It has a lot of great, fine features. They have it at computergeeks for $339 and it is USB, though. And it has an optical zoom. Very sweet camera. And it records movies!!!
I think you can still get $20 off if you put Geek4700 in the specials box when you order. I would suggest at least 2.1 megapixel. At the very least. The price of cameras shoots up when you add an optical zoom onto it. You pay through the nose for that feature. Any most digital camera is good. What you should look for is features and cost. And there are excellent review sites on the internet. Find a camera and go to Google and type review and there are a handful of excellent camera review sites.
