I have been using a "new media" brand PCMCIA to Smartmedia adapter for a
couple of years to read JPG format photos into my powerbook and IBM
thinkpad.
Twice I have had format errors where the card was put into the powerbook
and reported unreadable.
One time the powerbook was a 540 (OS 7.6.1) with the rev B card cage
and I have not been able to recover the photos (camera won't read, IBM
won't read, Norton Utilities won't see the card on either computer). The
second time the powerbook was a Wallstreet 266 (OS 8.6) and I was able
to recover the card using scandisk on the thinkpad.
I'm worried that the smartmedia format may have trouble with the desktop
and resource forks that the powerbook puts on the card.
Since the second error I try not to use the adapter to transfer photos
to the powerbook, instead I connect through a Macally USB card. My
current Olympus (D-100) connects direct through USB and automatically
mounts on the desktop as a drive. If I have to use the adapter I
transfer to the IBM first just in case....
