For myself it was a few things:

1) At the time I began lusting after a PowerBook, the PB Firewire was
what was on Apple's store's site, and I had put the 400 MHz model in the
'save for later' list, not figuring I'd be able to get one (unless I won
the lottery, etc.).

2) I like the shape/form (I have an undergrad major in art ed.) - not
boxy looking (which to me the current TiBooks are - just my opinion). For
me, the PB FireWire (and the Bronze just before it) has (have) cool
shape(s).

3) I like the black rather than silver color. I generally like neutral
colors like beige and black (they go well with any other colors, pretty
much - again, the art background).

4) I like the larger screen of the PB Firewire, and I used to have on my
first Mac (a IIcx) a monster of a 21 inch Sigma monitor which also was
1024 X 768 (in fact, if you live near Cape Girardeau, MO, I'll make you a
VERY good deal on it - shipping rules out shipping anywhere else).

5) The many output options on the back (including sound in/out, video and
S-video out), plus the speed of the 10/100 Ethernet and the FireWire
ports.

My two cents worth (might even be more, now that I look at all the above),
