Back in the pre-10.1 days, I was traveling and per my custom, grabbed the Pismo off the hotel dresser where it had been running on AC, closed it, put it in the padded laptop case, and left. It didn't go to sleep. Several hours later, I was alerted to a horrible burning plastic smell coming from the case; stopped the car, and found the Pismo locked up, fan off. Literally couldn't touch it for a couple of minutes; pulled both batteries out, was sure the computer was dead. Let it cool for almost an hour, put the batteries back in - nothing. Pulled the batteries again, tried it that night on AC - nothing. Went about my business, left it off overnight; tried again next morning just out of a sick sense of finality, and it came up as though nothing had happened. Only permanent effect has been a slightly noisier disk drive. The computer was so hot that I don't believe any shutdown was automatic, as it would have happened earlier. OTOH, obviously it wasn't working properly at the time. At any rate, I throw it out there for what it's worth. As an aside, that whole evening I was bracing myself for battle with the Apple warranty people - in my mind it was a product failure, since the machine fried itself by not entering sleep mode the way it has every time before and since.
