This is a first for me. Well, you have a couple of things at work here. First, file sharing works over AppleTalk. It's been known for some time now that when you have AppleTalk on when you wake up the computer, it takes several seconds to restore the connection. All this time, it seems like the computer is frozen. I don't experience this delay in OS X, though. Next, file sharing has to make some verifications on the volumes you're sharing.
