OK, this isn't a direct answer to your question, but maybe I just like typing...
With my Pismo 400, OS9.1 and an Ericsson T39m I just selected 'Ericsson Infrared' from the Modem control panel (there's a 'Nokia Infrared' as well), set it to 'Infrared Port', turned on the infrared port on my phone, pointed the two ports at each other (obviously) and it worked straight off. And I'm betting you'll find it just as simple...
