I don't think you need to feel as though you are being attacked or need to
be defended- it is more a question of etiquette. *shrugs* In the same way
that social etiquette generally says that you should turn your cell phone
onto vibrate when you are in a movie theatre there are a bunch of internet
etiquettes.

The two big ones for lists are not quoting a 3 page message and tagging on
"I agree" at the end, or TYPING ALL IN CAPS (that is my peeve, lord).

Didn't see if it was mentioned (I filtered out most of the .sig messages)
but one thing that can help the people using digest to avoid scrolling
(especially on notebooks) if your mail app supports it is to create a
separate folder, with a mail rule (its easier than it sounds) that takes all
the messages from your list and puts them in there, and then "view as
threaded".

It lets you only view the threads you're interested in, and bypasses all of
the other stuff.
